TREE OF HEAVEN, AILANTHUS or CHOUCHUS

Deciduous plant belonging to the family Simaroubaceae. It is native to central and northwestern China and Taiwan. Unlike other members of the genus Ailanthus, is widespread in temperate rather than tropical.

The tree grows rapidly and is able to reach heights of 15 m in 25 years. However, it is short-lived and usually does not exceed 50 years.

In China, the tree of heaven has a long and rich history. It is mentioned in the oldest Chinese dictionary known and mentioned in countless Chinese medical texts for its recognized ability to heal ills, ranging from mental illness to hair loss.

The roots, leaves and bark are still used today in traditional Chinese medicine, primarily as astringent. The tree is widely cultivated in China and other countries for raising Ailanthus silkmoth , a moth used for the production of silk.

The tree was imported into Europe for the first time in 1740 and in the United States in 1784. He was one of the first trees to be brought to the West in a time when chinoiserie was dominating European arts, and was initially presented as an ornamental plant. The initial enthusiasm soon waned after gardeners faced its pollinating ability and its foul smell. Although this was widely used for street trees during much of the nineteenth century.

Outside of Europe and the United States the plant was introduced in many other areas outside of its native range. In many of these has become an invasive species due to its ability to rapidly colonize disturbed areas and stifle competitors with allelopathic substances. It is considered a pest in Australia, the United States of America, New Zealand and several countries in Southern and Eastern Europe,. The tree also drives back vigorously when cut, making difficult and long its eradication. In some urban areas has been dubbed "ghetto palm" and "stink tree".

DOPO IL CARBONE

Siamo i cittadini del mondo, lo giriamo ed esploriamo, occupiamo e deturpiamo, colonizziamo e abbandoniamo. E' successo da poco che in modo così clamoroso molti uomini e donne possano spostarsi da una all'altra parte del globo, e con noi si sono aggregate, silenziosamente come sempre, le piante. nascoste nelle tasche e nei risvolti dei pantaloni, appiccicate ai maglioni o trasportate dal vento fisso di treni ed auto.

E quando qualcuno si accorge che ci sono immigrati irregolari nella nostra flora, si arrabbia, e urla disastro. Lo sono senza dubbio, e i loro nomi in alcuni paesini diventano ricorrenti quanto i casi di omicidio irrisolti che dobbiamo subirci dai media, ma esistono, e sono un monito vivente per tutto ciò che indirettamente stiamo facendo al mondo, botanicamente parlando. un po come la legge del contrappasso.

e allora eccoci al punto! boschi di ailati, canneti di poligono giapponese, intrichi di kudzu! impariamo a conoscere i pericoli e le potenzialità di chi è arrivato e prepotentemente soffoca il nostro ecosistema dove questo è già debole a causa del troppo cemento!

AFTER THE COAL

We are citizens of the world, we travel and explore it, we occupy and destroy, we invade and abandon. It happened short time ago that in a way so clamorous many people, men and women, could move from one part to another of the world, and with us the plants are added, silently as always.

Hidden in pockets and pants, attached to jumpers or carried from the wind of trains and cars. And when somebody realizes that there are regular immigrants in our flora, he gets angry, and screams "Disaster".

They are a problem, certainly, and their names in some small countries become recurrents as unresolved murder's event that we must suffer by media, but they exist, and they are a living warning for everything that we're doing indirectly to the world, botanically saying.

And so here we are (at the point)! Wood of Ailanthus, groves of Japan's polygon, mazes of kudzu! We learnto know danger and potentialities about who arrived and arrogantly suppress our ecosystem, which is already weak because of too much cement!
